The history of the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

The annual Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest began over 100 years ago.

The owner of the Coney Island stand, Nathan Handwerker, overheard four immigrants arguing over who was more patriotic.

He challenged them to a hot dog eating contest and said the winner would be deemed most American.

The contest is now an annual event that millions tune in to watch every year on Independence Day.
