Police officer critical after 'unprovoked attack' in the Bronx

Authorities say a New York City police officer has been shot and is in ‘extremely critical condition.’

The shooting took place near the corner of Morris Avenue and East 183rd Street.

The New York Police Department wrote on Twitter that the female officer was shot while in a patrol vehicle with her partner in the Bronx early Wednesday.

The suspect was later shot and killed after pointing a revolver at other police officers. A bystander was injured during the encounter and is in stable condition at an area hospital, authorities say.

The 12-year veteran was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital for treatment. The officer’s name has not been released.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
