NYPD blows up watermelons to encourage fireworks safety on July 4

The New York City Police Department is warning against the dangers of fireworks by blowing up watermelons in a video encouraging firework safety for July 4.

“Fireworks are dangerous and illegal,” the NYPD said in a tweet Sunday. “Stay safe and out of trouble, leave it to the professionals.”

The video shows a firework in between two large watermelons before exploding in an open field.

“If this goes off on your hand one of this size, you’ll lose probably up to the elbow,” Commanding Officer of the NYPD’s Bomb Squad, Lt. Mark Torre, said in the video while holding a multi-colored firework.

Police Commissioner James O’Neill said at a press conference Friday that New Yorkers should remain vigilant, despite no credible terror threats against the city, as the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks show approaches.

“Everyone should leave the use of fireworks to the professionals and come out and enjoy the show over the East River,” NYPD spokesman, Sgt. Brendan Ryan, said.
