A man in his 40s lost his part of his hand while shooting off fireworks in the Kilbourn Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.
It was the second year in a row that a person in Chicago lost part of his hand while setting off fireworks around the Fourth of July holiday, according to officials.
Tuesday’s call came in from the 4600 block of West Belmont Avenue about 12:45 p.m., a Chicago Fire Department representative said. The man was taken by ambulance to Illinois Masonic Hospital.
The man had only two fingers remaining on his hand, the representative added. “I don’t know if there’s the possibility of saving it,” he said.
The Fire Department said it cannot stress enough the importance of exercising caution with fireworks and sparklers. More safety tips can be found here.
