Drugs found after man has cops retrieve wallet from vehicle: police


An Elgin man who asked police to retrieve his wallet, keys and cell phone from his vehicle following a driving under the influence arrest was charged with drug possession when officers found cocaine in the wallet, Elgin police said.

Chanthou J. Latine, 38, of the 400 block of Center Street, Elgin, was charged with a class 4 felony count of possession of a controlled substance following the incident.

According to police, officers were processing Latine for a local ordinance DUI charge at the Elgin jail when he asked officers to retrieve his personal items from his vehicle, which had been towed. Prior to giving Latine the items, officer searched the wallet per Elgin police procedures.

Inside a folded dollar bill, officers found about 2 grams of a substance that tested positive for cocaine, police said.

Bail was set at $30,000 and he was given a July 24 court date.
