2nd man dies after South Side triple shooting

A man shot in the Bronzeville neighborhood early Sunday died about 15 hours after another man was killed and a third wounded, authorities said.

Robert Cooley, 31, was wounded in the same shooting about 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the 4200 block of South State Street that killed Arthur L. Smith, 47, authorities said. Cooley, of the 4100 block of South Prairie Avenue, was pronounced dead at 4 p.m. Sunday at Stroger Hospital, after suffering a gunshot wound to the head, the Cook County medical examiner’s office determined following an autopsy.

Smith, of the 4000 block of South King Drive, was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:13 a.m. Sunday.

A 49-year-old man was shot in the arm, and he went on his own to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized.
Police did not release details about what led to the shooting. The morning of the shooting, officers focused on a vacant lot across from Metcalfe Park.

No one was in custody.
