A man who officers say wasn’t the intended target of a passing gunman was shot dead as he sat in a car Tuesday afternoon, police said.
About 5:15 p.m. a 21-year-old was sitting in a car in the 200 block of East 132nd Street in the Eden Green neighborhood, right near the Calumet River on the Far South Side, according to a police notification system.
A light-colored sedan pulled up and someone inside opened fire at another vehicle, witnesses said. The assailant kept firing, eventually hitting the 21-year-old, who police said, “was parked in a vehicle was not the intended target,” according to information police provided.
The 21-year-old was shot in the head and he was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
His slaying made him the 61st person shot during the extended holiday weekend. Eight of those shot have died, according to data compiled by the Tribune.
About 90 minutes earlier, two people were shot in the first 11600 block of South State Street in the West Pullman neighborhood, also on the Far South Side.
An 18-year-old was shot in the head and in the right arm. He was uncooperative with police; it wasn’t immediately clear whether he’d let emergency responders work on him.
The other man, 20, was shot in the armpit, officials said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where his condition was stabilized, authorities said.
Authorities said the men who were shot both have gang affiliation.
