Police shot and killed a man after he reportedly tried to steal a helicopter at an Oregon airport on Monday, authorities said.
Shots rang out at Hillsboro Airport at about 11:40 a.m., after a man approached a flight instructor and a student while pointing a gun at them, Oregon Live reported.
Police told the newspaper that the suspect managed to fire at least one gunshot. The instructor and the student escaped by jumping into a helicopter, and police shot the suspect dead in a field after he tried to run away, according to Oregon Live.
The suspect’s identity wasn’t released. There were no reports of other injuries.
Witnesses and employees at the airport about 16 miles west of Portland told KATU that someone tried to steal a helicopter before the gunfire was heard.
One witness said they saw a masked man with a hoodie fleeing police.
The Hillsboro Fire Department tweeted that it was en route to the scene.
